1. About the program and its main topics
The idea of establishing this program is due to the growing importance of the subject of the social studies curriculum in its various discussions as a real tool of change that works to shape the individual to be a citizen in which the image of reform is reduced, as well as its profound role in providing knowledge about the past and present and reading the future, as well as its strengthening, shaping and refining the values of society and the individual according to the system of civilizational values in its local, national and global dimensions. The social studies curriculum also establishes a solid basis for expanding the global perspective of the individual and produces value standards that make him distinguish between separation from the cultural system of the other and communication with him within the framework of his understanding of the local cultural specificities and their generalities, which are considered among the human commonalities.
This deep general framework of the social studies curriculum expresses its exceptional role in organizing societies and shaping the thought and culture of their members, and this calls for giving it exceptional importance in the development of a doctoral program that addresses these important dimensions of the curriculum, addressing them by rooting and rationalizing them, and alerting the students of the program to their effects on the present and future of the Jordanian state.
The program emphasizes a number of vital contemporary topics that highlight the functionality of social studies in public life, such as democratic values, citizenship, an open-minded mindset to various social studies issues, values: teaching and learning, and the knowledge and technology economy in social studies.
It is worth mentioning that the PhD program, Curriculum and Teaching/Social Studies, comes one of the tracks that emerged from the PhD program in Curriculum and Teaching at the College of Educational Sciences, along with other tracks.
